Today only a shadow of its former glory, the Beehive was previously a barracks, a hotel, then a bar, since 1888. It’s called The Beehive because, seemingly, a Dutchman was the original owner and he kept bees in the back garden. There is a story told that the late Baden-Powell rode down Beechmount and entered the bar, still on horseback. There used to be an unusual selection of tiles depicting Shakespeare’s plays and the different seasons, but now they’re gone. What still remains above the bar is a lovely copper motif of a beehive. Architecturally speaking, in its heyday, this was one of the finest bars in the city, with its exuberant stucco works incorporating a very decorative beehive.
