After a time the visitor will begin to recognise the hand of certain designers in the bars he visits and the name John Robb will immediately be associated with bars of style and distinction. Mr Robb, of Bangor, is responsible for such excellent designs as are to be found in the Aylesfort of Warrenpoint and Carmichaels of Holywood. When asked what his own personal favourite would be he thought long and hard then stated quite firmly that it would have to be the Magheramorne House Hotel between Larne and Carrickfergus. Formerly an old peoples’ home called the Manor House this exquisite building sits among fabulous gardens and lawns and is approached by a curving tree lined avenue. The entire hotel is an object lesson in design and taste but for the purpose of this book we will merely consider the bar itself.
Situated on the ground floor, it is instantly noticeable for the polished granite counter top set in richly carved and panelled mahogany. Complementing this blend of stone and wood, is a well matched use of brass rails, bars and spiral supports to give a most pleasing overall effect. The brass and mahogany work is also to be found along the back wall behind the bar. This is topped by a long mirror which reaches to the ceiling and runs the full length of the bar. Clusters and festoons of foliage are hand-painted onto this mirror so that they seem to fall from the ceiling. The snugs which face the bar are again done in mahogany and brass with plush velvet seating, while two recessed ‘windows’ in the wall have nicely painted murals of hills, lakes and fine old buildings, from the hand of Naomi McBride of Belfast.
As you would expect the bar area is thickly carpeted while theatre style curtains and marble pillars further add to the impression of style and opulence. From the ceiling hang stained glass trays holding indoor gardens whose plants are highlighted by the natural vegetation to be seen outside the huge windows adjacent to the bar counter. The pleasure of sitting in such tasteful surroundings is heightened by the friendly and courteous attitude of the bar staff, so that all in all, it is understandable why John Robb chose this as his favourite bar out of all those for which he is responsible.
