Lots of Sunderland pubs now gone….The Caledonian, Lambton Street was amazing, bar ceiling thickly coated in nicotine (long before smoking banned), exacerbated by heat from ceiling mounted gas heaters! Not much health and safety evident!
As an apprentice i both worked at the Cally (decorating) and drank there. Regulars would approach you a view to selling you stuff….usually clothes, shoes or fish! Their conversation would commence with “alreet youngun, what yer like for fish?” or “what size jeans are yer?”
