You could easily miss this gem of a little bar. You will find it next door to the Allied Irish Bank, and you must keep your eyes down for it, as you have to descend steps to reach it. I think there is something magical about a cellar bar. This one is the only one of its kind in the city, and it’s a real beauty. It was formerly the home of St. Malachy’s Old Boys’ Club, but in 1988 a new licence was granted to Pat McCormack, who passed it on to John and Marie Higgins of the Four Winds fame. The architect was Barry Todd, and the interior designer Toni Wilson. It’s a credit to them what they have produced in such a small area. The predominant colours are grey and black, it’s cosy and intimate, yet skilfully and pleasantly decorated with cabinets and stained glass running throughout the bar. On the walls are two original drawings by John Luke (one of his paintings was sold recently in a Sotheby’s sale at Belfast Castle for a world record price of £176,000).
From the day it opened, John and Marie made sure that the Four Winds high standard was maintained here in their city centre bar. From 12 to 3, à la carte lunch is served daily and it is generally packed with businessmen, solicitors and lawyers, etc. Belfast City Centre has long waited for a classy little business bar and this fits the bill admirably.
