Killead
Carmony Road, Killead, County Antrim. After looking at this address you are probably still none the wiser where it is. The best course is to take the Airport road from Nutts Corner roundabout .. go as far as you can until you have to turn right and you will find it about ½ mile down this twisty road on your right. This very small bar (formerly a Spirit Grocers) has been in the Heaney Family for over 200 years. Sam Heaney, the present owner, is the 3rd generation. The Bar consists of two small rooms, the public Bar measuring approximately 12 feet by 6 feet and a little Parlour beside it about the same size. Look for the antique bottles of wines and spirits on the two top shelves that look like that they haven’t beeen disturbed in years. Behind the bar and on your left in the corner is a very old wooden cash drawer, very much in use today. The clientele is largely a local one. Not many visitors pass through the door, as here they cater mostly for the locals and the motor bike enthusiasts. The house and out buildings are much older than the pub. Many years ago a Holy Water Font or Baulin was discovered embedded in one of the exterior walls in an outhouse at the rear of the Pub. This seems to indicate that on this site was once a Religious or Monastic Settlement. The Holy Water Font, by the way, can be found in the small Lisburn Museum.
