Whites Tavern has been bought by Clover Group, whose estate includes Pug Uglies – and they have promised to refurbish Belfast’s oldest pub.

Whites, new owners vow to keep the ‘charm’ of the historic pub, by retaining a toilet roll holder, a door handle and the ‘Iconic’ Biffa bin, but everything else is going into a skip.

‘We want to update this historic pub so that it looks like every other pub in our portfolio.

You want stripped back walls? You got it.

Do you want exposed beams? You got it.

You want those funny light bulbs you can see the element in? You got it.

You want a stupid rename? We’re working on it-we’re thinking something Paddys, or Boscos.

We are keeping the 17th-century bar, but we’re going to nail a sheet of aluminum to it and paint the dark wood pastel green’.

Whites survived the blitz and the Troubles, but it probably won’t survive a Dulux colour chart.
